The Atherosclerosis Research Unit at the Department of Laboratory Medicine was established in 2009 following the appointment of Christoph Binder as Professor of Atherosclerosis Research. A major focus of the research unit is to elucidate how inflammation and various aspects of immunity modulate atherosclerosis and the clinical manifestations associated with it, and test whether these responses can be exploited for the development of better strategies to treat cardiovascular disease. To obtain a comprehensive view of these processes, ongoing research programs integrate the contribution of major risk factors of cardiovascular disease, such as dyslipidemia, fatty liver disease, and obesity with inflammatory and immune responses.
